Multiply using the grid method
The grid is the easiest method for written multiplication, and is a good starting point for progressing to the other methods.
Before starting, you need to be confident with your times tables and multiplying by 10 and 100. The grid method breaks down the multiplication into steps or chunks. You multiply each digit by each other digit. Setting the calculation out in a grid is a good way to organise your working out. e.g. 34 x 28 splits into: 30 x 20 = 600 30 x 8 = 240 20 x 4 = 80 4 x 8 = 32 You get your final answer by adding up 600, 240, 80 and 32 to get 952 |
